About Us

Started in 2007 by former Queens Borough President, Claire Shulman, the Flushing Willets Point Corona Local Development Corporation is an organization composed of private and public sector stakeholders that seek to develop a comprehensive set of economic development goals for the Greater Flushing – Willets Point – Corona area.

The LDC is dedicated to the facilitation of development projects that help revitalize and stabilize the communities of Greater Flushing Willets Point Corona of Northern Queens. We focus on development initiatives including area-wide parking and traffic solutions, health and wellness, the expansion of affordable housing, infrastructure improvement and mass transit.

PORTFOLIO


Our portfolio includes a wide array of projects from affordable housing, an approximately 40-acre BOA waterfront plan, transportation initiatives, and beautification of our city.

 

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

The FWCLDC is an advocate for the implementation of affordable housing. The LDC has spurred the development of affordable housing in conjunction with the improvement of the Flushing Main Street Long Island Railroad Station. Through the Flushing Waterfront Revitalization Plan, additional opportunities for affordable housing have been created.


AESTHETICS

For two years, the FWCLDC, with support from its funders, has been providing horticultural care for planters on twelve medians and a pedestrian island refuge (triangular center between Northern Boulevard and Roosevelt Avenue, Queens). These planters not only cater to the beautification of Downtown Flushing, but are also traffic-calming devices that slow cars driving on either sides of these islands.  Additionally, the island refuge is a safe place for pedestrians to pause or wait while crossing the long road that is Northern Boulevard and Roosevelt Avenue.


FLUSHING WATERFRONT

Working with the Department of City Planning, the LDC has completed a BOA Nomination for the Flushing waterfront and is currently awaiting designation from the Department of State. The Flushing Waterfront Revitalization Plan aims to transform underutilized, vacant, and environmentally-challenged areas into a vibrant, new mixed-use community.


TRANSPORTATION 

The LDC is an initial proponent of rehabilitating the LIRR Station on Main Street. Major renovation work started in 2016 and should conclude around 2018. In addition to the LIRR station improvement, the LDC advocated for the rehabilitation of the Roosevelt Ave Bridge, which would include bike lanes.
