HEALTHY FLUSHING COMMUNITY ACTION PLAN
(HFCAP)

As a local development corporation, our role is not limited to developing bricks and mortar.

It is also about developing a vibrant and healthy community.

FLUSHING STATS

DATA FROM 2016 AMERICAN COMMUNITY SURVEY AND 2017 NYC COMMUNITY HEALTH PROFILES

57%  are foreign born

47%  limited English proficiency

24% do not have health coverage

21.5%  are seniors age 62 and over

72% have had no exercise in the last 30 days

Flushing has a high population of seniors (many of whom speak little to no English) and a lack of accessible health care coverage for low-income families. Through HFCAP, we will work with community service organizations to infuse healthy living activities into open spaces, advocate for new programs and services that will enhance community well-being (particularly senior citizens) and prepare a community plan that will address unmet health care needs and foster a community-wide emphasis on healthy living options.  The FWCLDC primarily focuses on the waterfront development and ultimately, we hope to incorporate the input from these meetings into the healthy living activities to take place along the Flushing waterfront esplanade.

Community visioning meetings will be held quarterly and will provide a valuable opportunity to hear from community members about needs and service gaps to be addressed as part of a long-lasting health infrastructure for residents.
