As a complementary initiative to the TOD project, the LDC has worked to significantly improve the Flushing LIRR station. The Flushing LIRR stop has been severely underutilized due to its inaccessibility and lack of clear signage. Additionally, the western and eastern entrances had fallen into a state of disrepair, characterized by litter and graffiti.
To address the station’s many shortcomings, the LDC has worked with the MTA and the LIRR to identify useful station improvements.
These improvements will include:
- two new elevators to make the station handicap accessible
- new ticket office,
- new staircases and canopies,
- improved signage,
- new north side station plaza that connects Main Street with the 40th Road passageway,
- platform railings,
- and warning stripes.
The project is expected to be completed third quarter of 2017.
